Papua, BNG & New Guinea
During the colonial period, both Papua and New Guinea issued their own stamps. Papua, the southeastern part of the island, issued its first stamps in 1901, featuring a portrait of Queen Victoria. New Guinea, the northern part, issued its first stamps in 1915, with designs depicting local scenes and the German imperial eagle overprinted with "G.R.I." (Georgius Rex Imperator) during World War I.
